National Marine Week

22 July - 7 August 2023

Dive in!

National Marine Week is The Wildlife Trusts' annual, nationwide celebration of all things marine! This year, we're championing our lesser-known animal and plant species that live in our Welsh seas. From sea hares and lightbulb squirts, to harbour porpoise and Risso's dolphins, our seas are teeming with life.

Seagrass Ocean Rescue

Seagrass is a flowering plant which lives beneath our waters. It has many incredible benefits, including helping the fight against climate change, hosting thousands of species and protecting our coasts from erosion.

North Wales Wildlife Trust are a delivery partner of the Seagrass Ocean Rescue project, aiming to restore seagrass meadows in North Wales.

Shark and skate eggcase hunts

Have you ever heard of a mermaid's purse? These amazing finds are actually the eggcases of sharks and skates.

Each eggcase holds one baby shark which, once hatched,  swims away ... the empty eggcases get washed up onto our shores, ready for us to collect!

Learn how to ID the different shark eggcases using this handy guide!

Intertidal rockpooling

Scour the intertidal zone for all sorts of exciting creatures! Use the spotter sheets to tick off which species you've found living within your local rockpools.

Have you noticed the dark red tentacles of the beadlet anemone? Or the blue claws of the velvet swimming crab?

Don't forget, it's really important to stick to the rockpooling code whilst out on shore, and ensure that no animals are removed or injured.

Not by the coast? Don't worry!

National Marine Week isn't just for those with access to the coast!

Everybody can get involved, no matter where you live!
