Thanks to the amazing efforts of the Dŵr Cymru / Welsh Water team, and Area Manager Nick Kite in particular, a pair of ospreys have nested on a specially built platform in the lake – barely 250m from our shoreline.

At the time of writing, we finally have confirmation that the snappily named Blue24 and HR7 have successfully hatched their eggs – a chick has been seen!  Although we’ve had suspicions for some time, we couldn’t be completely certain – Nick discovered that a carefully positioned camera is no match for an osprey’s bottom siting on it and bending the transmitting aerial …

These are the first ospreys to breed in North-East Wales for at least 400 years – a wonderful conservation success story.

Reasonable views of the ospreys can be had from the lakeside near the Llyn Brenig sailing club (GR: SH 967 551 – c.1.1km away) or Gors Maen Llwyd itself (best from the old road around SH 973 564 – c.350m).  Please park considerately, bring appropriate footwear, and respect the nature reserve – a special place for all sorts of wildlife!  You may even see our staff on hand near the sailing club to guide your viewing – we’ll be there to help out when we can during the summer months.
