There will be loads of things to see and do on the day including guided walks of the site, nature guides and children’s activities, pond dipping with Mike Dilger and ‘Open Air Laboratory’ activities. Refreshments from local producers will be available to purchase. You can also get involved with the Minera Quarry bio-blitz being co-ordinated by Cofnod (North Wales’s Biological Record Centre) – you may even discover a new species to add to our ever-growing list for the site!

After many years of campaigning and negotiating, the Wildlife Trust finally took ownership of Minera Quarry from Tarmac in Summer 2017 and has spent the last few months making the site safe and accessible to the public. Whereas the quarry was previously closed to the public save for access by one solitary public footpath, the site will now be open for people to freely explore where it is safe to do so.

The nature reserve is well known for its diverse calcareous grassland flora, orchids, butterflies and peregrine falcon nest. The extensive limestone cave network and some of the post-industrial quarry buildings are important winter roosts for several bat species.

Whilst there is car parking at the end of Maes y Ffynnon Road (LL11 3DE / SJ 25844 51945), please lift-share where possible as space is limited. Wheelchair and mobility scooter access will be possible on a tarmacked track from the car park to the opening event, but please note that the rest of the site comprises rough ground.
