Osprey sightings update
The ospreys at Llyn Brenig appear to be no longer using their nest. The last report of them seen on the nest was on 6/8/20, with a sighting of 1 osprey on the nest perch early morning on 7/8/20. Early evening on 9/8/20, we observed all 3 ospreys perching in the conifers near to the nest. However, we saw no evidence of the nest being used that day or since. We have seen ospreys flying over the far side of Gors Maen Llwyd Nature Reserve and had have heard reports of them been seen elsewhere around the reservoir.
Ospreys will use their nest right up to the very time they leave on migration: it plays an important part in the development of the chicks and their preparation for the long and arduous journey. All 3 ospreys were originally seen returning regularly to the nest during the day but particularly in the early morning and evening, when the chick would call for food and the adults bring in fish. The chick is dependent upon the adults right up until migration and needs feeding up to give it the best chance of survival.
We are aware of reports of the filming activities at Llyn Brenig and the potential disturbance to the ospreys. We are urgently, and independently, making enquiries. We will issue a statement on our final conclusions as soon as we reach them. Please be assured that we are pursuing this as a matter of urgency.
