What is Y Môr a Ni?
Y Môr a Ni (The Sea and Us) is the UK's first national Ocean Literacy Strategy and has launched right here in Wales!
Ocean literacy is most simply defined as understanding your influence on the ocean and its influence on you. The marine environment makes up almost half of the area of Wales and is a hugely important resource for us all – for leisure, for work and as a source of energy, food and diverse wildlife.
Every Welsh citizen can make a difference in helping to protect our Welsh seas and coast and we all, in some shape or form, have a relationship with our marine environment.
Y Môr a Ni was co-designed by the Welsh Ocean Literacy Coalition (WOLC), a network of over 20 partners from across Wales, including North Wales Wildlife Trust, Natural Resources Wales, Welsh Government, The Marine Conservation Society and Cardiff University. WOLC was established by the Wales Seas and Coast Partnership (CaSP Cymru).
As part of Y Môr a Ni, there will be two pilot Festival of the Sea events launching in 2025: the first in Milford Haven on 8th and 9th March and the second in Flint on 22nd March.
The festivals will bring together partners from across the sector and beyond, shining a light on the vast array of benefits the sea provides us, and what we can do to ensure that the sea remains sustainably managed in the years to come. They will feature music and the arts, seafood demonstrations and water sport activities, amongst many other events and activities.
