Meet Ellen, who works in our Marketing and Communications team, having come to the Trust as a Stand for Nature Wales trainee and Youth Forum member in 2019.  She is now a valued member of our staff team, with great things ahead!

What does your role involve?
I mainly work in admin, writing for and monitoring social media, developing content for our newsletter, website and editorials. I also work part-time for trading where I’m working to improve our online shop, and am developing an exhibition as part of the Garden Escapers project.

What was your career path to NWWT?
I started out as a youth forum member in 2019, having completed the summer traineeship as part of the Stand for Nature Wales project. As an active member of the forum, I had the opportunity to grow my interest and knowledge of nature and wildlife and learnt how to communicate messages to the public by supporting events. I was also able to develop some practical conservation skills by volunteering. In 2023, I applied for an internship, which led to my role in communications and marketing today!

When did you first become interested in nature and wildlife?
When I learnt about the impacts of climate change in high school, I was struck by the need to do something about it. I also really enjoyed spending time outdoors in nature, which gave me an appreciation for wildlife. When I learnt about the ways that biodiversity and climate change are connected, I was inspired to protect the natural world which was only strengthened as I came to learn more about the incredible species that occupy our planet.

What’s the best thing about your job?
I really enjoy the variety that comes with role. I have the chance to work with lots of different people across the movement and beyond, and feel like I get to learn something new every day!

Can you tell us something that has inspired you recently?
Recently I’ve started reading Steve Backshall’s Deep Blue. I think the way he focuses on the perspective of our incredible marine life is a great reminder that empathy with others, whether they be human or not, is incredibly important.
