Remembering Jessica Madge
In loving memory of Jessica Madge (d. 2024)
Jess was born in Swansea and her love of gardening, plants and wildlife was cultivated both by her grandmother Leah - who never missed an opportunity to take a cutting - and by time spent enjoying the beaches, rock pools, woodlands and moors of the Gower.
She moved to North Wales in 2013 with her husband Brian and whist he did a PhD at the School of Ocean Sciences, she got involved in the local community. This included learning Welsh; joining the local Labour Party which she chaired for a while; joining Bangor Community Choir; and getting involved with initiatives such as Croeso Menai and Hope Not Hate in support of refugees.
One of her many concerns was the low level of tree cover on Anglesey. Rather than flowers she wanted to be remembered by planting some trees - native species that would enhance local biodiversity. Money raised will therefore be used to support NWWT tree planting on the Caeau Pen y Clip Nature Reserve, where Jess used to regularly walk before her illness intervened. An area of woodland will be a perfect memorial for a remarkable woman.
